LIBRARY ADVENTURE
by Dawn Burgoon & Donna Woody
Text by Dave Moorman
If you have been to a library at a
major university, you know that the
stacks are either closed to students,
or a wonderful place to make out with
you significant other. (OK, this is
assuming you were in college before
Co-Ed dorms.)
The only danger came when you
actually wanted to find some reference
material in the stacks. Then you had
to know the Dewey Decimal System. This
quaint quiz program takes you on just
such an adventure through the musty
tomes of yesteryear. The only horror
not simulated is finding that the
[one page] of information you were
looking for had been neatly removed
with a razor blade.
Here is a [very early] LOADSTAR
program. Originally found in an
"Apple" crate at Softdisk it was
"ported" over to the world's best
8-bit machine by Donna Woody.
In the early days, according to
Jim Weiler -- and early editor of
LOADSTAR -- many APPLE II programs
were brought over to the C-64.
Softdisk Monthly (Apple II) had a two
year headstart on LOADSTAR and quite a
library of interesting software. Jim
says it was relatively easy because
the Apple II had a Microsoft BASIC
card.
Of course, such portings could not
possibly take advantage of the great
features of the VIC II and SID chips.
I would dare say that these two co-
processors are behind the longevity of
the C-64. And LOADSTAR.
